Lyft Launches First Driverless Robotaxi Service via Waymo in Nashville
Lyft reached a milestone by becoming the first ride-hailing company to offer commercial robotaxi services with driverless vehicles through its partnership with Waymo in Nashville. Under the deal, Lyft's subsidiary Flexdrive handles fleet services and depot operations, while Waymo provides the autonomous driving technology. Riders can hail a Waymo through the Lyft app. This marks Lyft's re-entry into autonomous vehicles after selling its self-driving unit to Toyota's Woven Planet in 2021. Lyft's EVP of Growth, Jeremy Bird, indicated plans to expand robotaxi partnerships internationally, including with Baidu in London, and to prioritize markets where a hybrid network of AVs and human drivers is viable. The news highlights Lyft's strategic shift towards global AV integration and its focus on diversifying partnerships.
