LocationSmart
LocationSmart is a enterprise geolocation and compliance software for regulated digital workflows.
Analyst Perspective
LocationSmart is a US-based B2B software company operating a cloud-based location intelligence platform for enterprises. Its core products combine geolocation verification, device profiling, geofencing, reverse geocoding and compliance controls through APIs, SDKs and a SaaS portal. The platform is aimed at organisations that need high-confidence location validation and geographic rule enforcement, particularly in regulated or operationally sensitive use cases such as gaming, financial services, logistics and IoT asset tracking. The company makes money primarily by selling usage-based access to its location services, typically through API-driven pricing, alongside enterprise contracts that can bundle platform access, SDKs, data assets and onboarding. It creates value by helping enterprise customers embed location verification and fraud-control functions into applications and workflows, reducing compliance risk and improving operational visibility.

Key insights about LocationSmart
Category Differentiation
LocationSmart is not a consumer location-sharing app or an adtech geotargeting vendor. It is a B2B enterprise geolocation and compliance software provider focused on verification, fraud control and jurisdiction enforcement.
LocationSmart: About
LocationSmart runs a location-as-a-service model. It provides proprietary geolocation, device intelligence and geofencing capabilities via APIs, SDKs, data services and a web portal, then monetises enterprise usage and contracted access. Value is created through technical integration into customer systems, where the platform supports compliance enforcement, fraud screening, asset monitoring and transaction validation.
How LocationSmart Works & Monetises
Business model analysis and core revenue streams
The commercial model is primarily usage-based and API-led, with charges tied to location request volume. Additional monetisation likely comes from SaaS access to the customer portal, implementation or onboarding fees, and enterprise contracts that bundle APIs, SDKs, reporting, device profiling, geofencing and proprietary data assets into customised pricing tiers.

Telcos Verizon, AT&T, and Sprint began restricting access to location data sold to third-party brokers in late June 2018, making it harder for advertisers to reach devices across the US (about two-thirds of devices). The move, framed as a shift toward telcos owning more of mobile advertising and data, could enable a 'telco tax' via exchanges and surcharges, according to the AdExchanger/Dstillery analysis. It disrupts a model where many DSPs and DMPs license data from intermediaries rather than directly from telcos; Verizon counts about 75 companies obtaining its data through LocationSmart and Zumigo. The piece notes that some players who collect data directly from bid streams or apps are unaffected, while the industry faces a scramble for independent sources, potential brand education needs, and questions about data quality and governance as telcos reassess access to location information.

LocationSmart, a cloud location data service, collected real-time location data from smartphones connected to AT&T, Verizon, Sprint, and T-Mobile in the United States. The data, intended for authorized customers to verify device locality, was reportedly exposed due to weak safeguards. Security researcher Robert Xiao demonstrated a demo vulnerability that could reveal users’ locations; KrebsOnSecurity reported that Xiao located up to two dozen subscribers by exploiting the flaw. LocationSmart said the vulnerability was identified and resolved, the demo disabled, and that no customer data was accessed without permission prior to May 16. The case follows earlier leaks in the sector, and U.S. Senator Ron Wyden has urged the FCC to investigate carriers’ data-sharing practices. Carriers AT&T, Verizon, Sprint, and T-Mobile have stated that data sharing occurs only for law enforcement or with user consent.
