illumin

illumin is a programmatic DSP for journey-based omnichannel campaign planning and buying.

Analyst Perspective

illumin Holdings Inc. is a Canadian adtech company whose core product, illumin, is a demand-side platform for programmatic advertising. The platform is designed for advertisers, agencies, trading desks, and performance marketing teams to plan, buy, optimise, and measure campaigns across channels including display, video, CTV, audio, social, DOOH, and in-app media. Its positioning centres on visual customer journey mapping and a unified workflow that combines forecasting, activation, optimisation, and analytics. The company makes money primarily from media spend transacted through its DSP, using a take-rate or margin model, with additional platform usage fees and enterprise commercial terms for self-serve and managed-service customers. illumin Holdings has also expanded its capabilities through past acquisitions in social targeting, video measurement, and SSP infrastructure, but its present commercial identity is anchored around its proprietary DSP platform.

Category Differentiation

This is a B2B programmatic advertising platform company, not a consumer media brand or a standalone creative agency. It should also be distinguished from general marketing automation tools, as its core function is DSP-based media buying and optimisation.

illumin: About

The business model combines proprietary adtech software with programmatic media execution. illumin provides a DSP interface used by agencies and brands to forecast, activate, and optimise campaigns across multiple digital channels, creating value through workflow consolidation, campaign transparency, and performance analytics. Revenue is tied both to software access and to advertising spend flowing through the platform, giving the company a hybrid software-plus-media transaction model.

How illumin Works & Monetises

Business model analysis and core revenue streams

illumin monetises chiefly through a percentage take-rate or margin on programmatic media spend running through its demand-side platform. It also appears to use platform access fees, minimum spend commitments, and negotiated enterprise contracts, with both self-service and managed-service execution models supporting revenue.

BBC Tops YouTube in UK Reach; AI Hits Publishers

After Publicis advised clients to stop transacting on The Trade Desk following a fee audit that found the DSP had "improperly applied" its fee and auto-opted some clients into fee-based offerings, Omnicom said it will commission its own third-party audit. The Trade Desk denied the allegations but its stock fell about 18% after the disclosures. Competing adtech firms and mid-market TV platforms — including StackAdapt, Quantcast, Tatari and Illumin — have actively marketed to agencies and buyers in the wake of the controversy, emphasizing transparency and alternative buying models. Agencies Dentsu and WPP have also exited The Trade Desk’s OpenPath service. It remains unclear whether rivals will capture significant spend from The Trade Desk amid the audits and wider industry scrutiny over DSP fees and transparency.

illumin and Broadsign Unite to Revolutionize DOOH Advertising

Digital ad tech company illumin (formerly AcuityAds) and DOOH ad tech developer Broadsign announced on August 3, 2023 that they have integrated Broadsign's supply-side platform (SSP) with illumin's journey advertising platform. The collaboration brings premium global DOOH inventory to illumin for the first time, enabling brands and agencies in more than 15 countries to run ads across DOOH formats—retail, roadside, EV charging, transit, and other OOH—alongside TV, CTV, and other digital ads. The integration positions illumin as a true cross-channel marketing hub, letting advertisers plan, optimize, and measure across channels from brand awareness to loyalty within a single platform. Andrey Feldman, vice president of products at illumin, called the move a crucial expansion of DOOH in the platform. John Dolan, Broadsign’s vice president, global head of media sales & service, said the partnership simplifies access to premium DOOH inventory for illumin users as they move through their day.
