Foursquare

Foursquare is a location intelligence, attribution and geospatial data software for enterprises.

Analyst Perspective

Foursquare is a private location technology company that sells geospatial data, audience activation, attribution and spatial analytics products to businesses. Its core commercial offering is B2B: advertisers, agencies, enterprises, developers and data teams use its products to measure store visits, build audience segments from real-world behaviour, run proximity targeting, access point-of-interest datasets and analyse spatial data. Although it still has a consumer app presence through Swarm, the provided product set shows an enterprise-led business centred on data and software rather than a consumer social network. The company makes money through a mix of SaaS subscriptions, usage-based API and compute pricing, data licensing and advertising-related activation and measurement fees. Its product breadth has been expanded through acquisitions and merger activity, notably Placed for attribution, Factual for POI and audience data, and Unfolded for geospatial analytics and visualisation.

Analyst Signal Briefing

Updated: 14 Aug 2026

Following its consolidation of Placed, Factual, and Unfolded, Foursquare continues to scale its geospatial intelligence via the 'Open Source Places' dataset and newly released strategic guidance for Q4 2026 seasonal targeting. The firm’s data remains central to cross-channel attribution, recently utilised in powering CTV and digital out-of-home campaigns for brands like Sulwhasoo to drive purchase intent. These developments, alongside the departure of SVP Kit Krugman, underscore Foursquare’s ongoing focus on providing foundational, high-precision measurement and location data for the evolving AdTech landscape.

Category Differentiation

This is the enterprise location intelligence company, not merely the legacy consumer check-in app. It should also be distinguished from pure mapping providers or standalone DSPs, because its core strength is location data, attribution and geospatial analytics.

Foursquare: About

Foursquare operates a B2B location intelligence model built on proprietary place, movement and geospatial datasets. It packages these assets into software and data products for two main use cases: advertising and marketing measurement/activation, and broader enterprise/developer location intelligence. Value is created by turning physical-world behavioural and venue data into usable APIs, datasets, analytics environments and campaign tools that customers embed into marketing, analytics and product workflows.

How Foursquare Works & Monetises

Business model analysis and core revenue streams

Foursquare monetises through several commercial mechanisms: SaaS subscriptions for attribution and spatial analytics products; usage-based or volume-based pricing for APIs, compute and data access; data licensing for place and geospatial datasets; and advertising-related activation or measurement fees for audience and proximity products integrated with programmatic workflows. This creates a blended revenue model spanning software subscription, data licensing and adtech-related fees.

AI search levels field between national brands and local firms

BrightLocal chief executive Myles Anderson argues that AI-powered search reduces the advantage of national brands over local businesses by rewarding narrow, provable local expertise, fresh content and direct booking capability. Large, multi-location brands risk appearing generic to language models unless they create localized, frequently updated signals across touchpoints. BrightLocal's Consumer Search Behavior Survey 2026 shows substantial consumer testing of AI for local recommendations, but many users still verify answers on Google. Anderson also highlights Google’s deep local data assets and warns that 'agentic' AI assistants able to book appointments could start routing leads toward businesses that permit direct agent interaction by late 2026.

Sulwhasoo Uses CTV and DOOH to Grow U.S. Sales

Sulwhasoo, a Korean beauty brand, is combining connected TV (CTV), digital out-of-home (DOOH) and online retargeting to drive US customer acquisition and in-store purchases. The brand partnered with video ad platform VDX.tv to run two test campaigns that layered CTV and DOOH awareness with retargeting across mobile and desktop. VDX.tv built audiences using data from Foursquare, TransUnion’s Commerce Signals and Stirista, and excluded past purchasers from Sulwhasoo’s customer lists. The CTV-first campaign produced a 6.5% interaction rate on retargeted site interactions, while a DOOH+CTV campaign recorded a 4.1% lift in awareness and a 3.4% increase in purchase intent (per Cint). Sulwhasoo’s products are sold via its website, Amazon, Sephora and Macy’s.
