Walmart Connect

Walmart Connect is a retail media arm for shopper data, ads and measurement.

Analyst Perspective

Walmart Connect is the retail media and advertising business operated by Walmart Inc. It sells access to Walmart-owned digital, in-store and offsite advertising inventory to brands, agencies and marketplace sellers. Its core products include self-serve campaign buying through Ad Center, sponsored search and sponsored products, display media, offsite audience activation and closed-loop measurement. The business uses Walmart first-party shopper and transaction data to target ads and attribute sales outcomes across online and store purchases. The unit generates revenue from advertiser spend across auction-based and reserved media formats, spanning sponsored listings, display, video, native and in-store placements. Its direct customers are businesses, not consumers, as the platform is explicitly for business-to-business use. Strategically, Walmart Connect extends Walmart's broader commerce ecosystem by turning retail traffic, shelf intent and purchase data into an advertising and measurement platform, with recent acquisitions in CTV expanding its full-funnel media reach.

Analyst Signal Briefing

Updated: 5 Aug 2026

Walmart Connect has finalised its $1.4 billion acquisition of Vibe.co, integrating the self-serve platform to scale connected-TV advertising for small businesses alongside its Vizio ecosystem. Building on the recent consolidation of Sam’s Club advertising into its core platform, this move strengthens vertical integration for closed-loop attribution. Furthermore, the company is formalising its role in agentic commerce via Google’s Universal Commerce Protocol and deepening programmatic partnerships with Magnite to unify brand storytelling and performance measurement across its extensive first-party commerce data.

Category Differentiation

This is Walmart Inc.'s advertising and retail media division, not the general Walmart retail business itself. It is a closed retail media platform built on Walmart inventory and shopper data, not an open-web DSP.

Walmart Connect: About

The business model combines media ownership, audience monetisation and advertising technology. Walmart Connect creates value by packaging Walmart's owned inventory, in-store reach and first-party transaction data into measurable media products for advertisers. It operates both self-serve and managed campaign workflows, enabling brands and sellers to buy placements across search, display, offsite and store environments while tying spend back to commerce outcomes. This converts Walmart's retail traffic and shopper behaviour into a recurring advertising revenue stream with embedded measurement.

How Walmart Connect Works & Monetises

Business model analysis and core revenue streams

Walmart Connect monetises primarily through advertising spend. Sponsored search and sponsored product formats use auction-based cost-per-click mechanics tied to keywords and product placements, while display, video, offsite and some premium inventory monetise on CPM and managed media buying models. Additional monetisation comes from premium brand placements, omnichannel store media, and data-driven measurement that supports larger advertiser budgets. The self-serve platform increases adoption among sellers and smaller advertisers, while managed sales relationships support larger enterprise accounts and agencies.

Magnite Aims to Own Decisioning Layer, Not Be DSP

On its Q2 earnings call, Magnite CEO Michael Barrett described the company expanding into buyer-like decisioning functions while insisting Magnite will not become a DSP. Magnite reported Q2 revenue of $193 million (up 11% YoY), contribution ex-TAC of $190 million (up 17%), and CTV revenue ex-TAC of $97 million (up 36% YoY). Barrett highlighted use cases where Magnite and SpringServe package inventory and audiences, apply optimization and AI-driven routing, and enable commerce media integrations with clients such as Fanatics, CVS Media Exchange, Best Buy, PayPal Ads and Walmart Connect (with Vizio inventory). Magnite launched Magnite Orchestration in June to help coordinate agentic workflows and positions itself as infrastructure for seller-side decisioning and democratized access to supply and data.

Walmart completes acquisition of Vibe.co

Walmart announced on August 4, 2026 that it completed its acquisition of Vibe.co, a five-year-old adtech startup founded in 2021 that provides self-service software for buying streaming TV ads. The Wall Street Journal reported the deal was valued at $1.4 billion. Vibe.co’s platform, used chiefly by small- and midsize brands, will be integrated into Walmart Connect to expand the retailer’s connected TV (CTV) advertising capabilities, make streaming campaigns more measurable and accessible, and support Walmart’s push to build an ad-supported streaming business that can compete for TV ad budgets (including versus Amazon). The acquisition follows Walmart’s 2024 purchase of TV maker Vizio, part of a broader strategy to strengthen its advertising and streaming offerings.

Horizon Media & Intent IQ Pilot Reaches 55% Net New Audience

At Cannes 2026, Horizon Media and Intent IQ discussed results from a joint pilot showing 55% net new users reached from existing audiences, with 45% of those converting to purchases. The conversation — led by AdExchanger Editorial Director Sarah Sluis with Fabrice Beer-Gabel (Intent IQ) and John Koenigsberg (Horizon Media) — covered why framing identity as deterministic vs. probabilistic is the wrong debate, the growing importance of accurate identity infrastructure as AI advances, and recommended actions for brands holding first-party data. The pilot reportedly achieved these outcomes without overhauling existing systems.
