What Telefónica does
Telefónica operates capital-intensive telecom networks and monetises them across multiple layers. At the consumer layer, it sells recurring mobile, broadband and entertainment subscriptions, often as bundles that raise ARPU and reduce churn. At the enterprise layer, it sells connectivity, cloud, cybersecurity, data, IoT and managed services on contract-based terms. At the wholesale and infrastructure layer, it grants access to network assets, fibre and related infrastructure through long-duration commercial agreements. Device sales add transactional revenue but are not the core economic engine.
Category differentiation
Telefónica is an integrated telecommunications group, not a pure advertising, martech or software vendor. Its enterprise technology units sit within a network operator business rather than existing as standalone cloud-native SaaS companies.
Strategic context
AI-supported assessment from the existing company research; distinguish interpretation from sourced facts.
Telefónica is a public multinational telecommunications operator headquartered in Spain. It provides mobile, fixed broadband, pay-TV and convergent consumer services through brands including Movistar, Vivo and O2, and it also sells enterprise connectivity, cloud, cybersecurity, data, AI, IoT and managed network services through Telefónica Tech and Telefónica Global Solutions. The group also commercialises telecom infrastructure assets and sells devices alongside service plans. Its revenue model is diversified across recurring consumer subscriptions, enterprise managed service contracts, wholesale network access, infrastructure monetisation and one-off device sales. The company serves mass-market households, SMEs, large enterprises, public sector bodies, multinational corporations, telecom partners and wholesale customers. Current strategy is centred on operational efficiency, fibre and 5G network leadership, B2B digital scale-up, and disciplined deleveraging.

O2 launches 'Mehrbilfunk' ad campaign to reposition beyond mobile
Advertising & Brand Marketing · Recorded impact score: 2/5
Telefónica's German brand O2 is launching a major advertising campaign to reposition itself beyond mobile communications. The new 'Mehrbilfunk' positioning, developed with lead agency Leo from Publicis Groupe, aims to promote 'Plus Bundles' that combine mobile tariffs with fixed-line, TV, streaming, additional SIM cards and smartphones. The campaign features TV spots and posters using a plus sign as a central design element. The move follows a difficult period: O2's Q2 revenue fell 11% to around €1.8 billion after losing major customer 1&1 to Vodafone, and EBITDA declined 7.2%. Telefónica is also cutting more than 1,000 jobs and closing 60 of 800 O2 shops in Germany. Steve Plesker, Director Brand & Marketing Communications, said the campaign aims to close the knowledge gap that O2 is only a mobile provider.
