The Wall Street Journal Serves Up Semantically Targeted Ads Programmatically

The Wall Street Journal began serving content-driven, semantically targeted ads by using Smartology's profiling technology to match ads to article content. For example, a reader viewing oil-price coverage may see a display unit with related financial content from advertisers such as HSBC, Credit Suisse, BlackRock and ING. The WSJ previously ran these campaigns via its own ad server but shifted to programmatic delivery in Q1. The move boosted revenue from Smartology campaigns as ads could appear next to more relevant content, though Smartology couldn't bid on all impressions within the Journal's waterfall and sought additional inventory aligned to semantic profiles. Smartology now operates private marketplaces through Google Ad Exchange and has added Index Exchange, moving away from DFP First Look to private marketplace deals on Google's platform. The initiative expanded to other Dow Jones properties, and WSJ can sell semantically targeted ads across its client list of about 70 brands, including BBC, CNN, and CNBC.
