The Exploration Company Raises €387M for Reusable Rocket Engine
The European Space Agency (ESA) has awarded its largest-ever contract to a European space startup, The Exploration Company (TEC), for cargo transport to the International Space Station (ISS). The service agreement, signed at the International Space Summit in Paris, is worth up to €760 million, including €310 million for a demonstration mission and €450 million for two optional missions. TEC must raise 40% of the demonstration cost privately. This follows TEC's record $450 million Series C round (€387 million), bringing total funding to about $680 million. The contract is part of ESA's ALADDIN program, formerly LCRS, signaling a strategic shift toward commercial space services. TEC's reusable Nyx capsule, targeted for ISS docking by November 2028, will be launched on an Ariane 6 rocket by Arianespace. TEC also has agreements with commercial space station operators Axiom, Starlab, and Vast. Founded in 2021 by CEO Hélène Huby, TEC employs over 550 people and has over $2 billion in contracts and commitments.
