Cloudflare Enables x402 Per-Request Payments
Cloudflare has activated HTTP 402-based payments by launching a Monetization Gateway that implements the x402 protocol at its edge. The flow returns a 402 with price details, the client signs a stablecoin payment (typically USDC on Base), and retries the request with proof of payment. Coinbase originally built and open-sourced x402 in May 2025 and transferred governance to the Linux Foundation in April 2026. Adoption data shows roughly 155 million cumulative transactions (~$41M) and 75 million transactions (~$24M) in the most recent 30-day window. The change could create a new revenue channel for content and data owners and shift AI agent economics, while raising risks of fragmentation and unpredictable agent costs.
