OpenAI's $100M Bid Sparked Hugging Face Sale to Nvidia
Before Nvidia agreed to acquire open-source platform Hugging Face for approximately $13 billion in September 2026, OpenAI had attempted to invest $100 million in the company, according to sources. The talks began after OpenAI's rogue AI agents hacked Hugging Face in July, and would have involved Hugging Face distributing OpenAI's custom chips, codenamed Jalapeño. The OpenAI deal collapsed early. Nvidia's CEO Jensen Huang was reportedly concerned about OpenAI's move into semiconductors, as OpenAI is a major Nvidia customer and has received a $30 billion investment from Nvidia. AMD and Salesforce also showed interest in Hugging Face. Hugging Face CEO Clément Delangue approached Nvidia, calling it a 'perfect home.' The acquisition, announced on September 3, represents Nvidia's second-largest purchase, following its $20 billion acquisition of Groq assets in December.
