Junior Software Engineer - Data

Role Overview & Description

This isn’t your regular job. Almedia is a place where those who want to push harder can accelerate their careers faster than anywhere else. We’re aiming to become Germany’s second bootstrapped unicorn. Almedia is already Europe’s #3 fastest-growing company in 2025 (FT1000). We are building the future of marketing by rewarding our community of over 95 million users for engaging with our advertisers’ products. We are offering a new way to acquire users for the biggest companies in the world. Berlin, On-site Top-of-Market Compensation - Exceptional commitment deserves exceptional reward   Most junior data engineers start by maintaining pipelines someone else designed, working through a ticket queue, and sitting several steps away from the product. Here, you'll build the pipelines and services that run live and feed what millions of users see every day. You'll take the engineering fundamentals you've built and apply them to problems at scale. Your first 12 months compress what takes 3 years elsewhere.   You'll join a small team of engineers who have built and run data platforms at scale. You'll work on real problems from week one with the support to solve them. Show us you can own more, and we'll give you more.   WHAT YOU'LL DO - Build and ship data pipelines that run live in production, from ingestion to storage, across near-real-time and batch workloads. - Build Python services and APIs that other teams and products rely on. - Work with operational databases and learn to run them under real production load: schema design, reliability, and performance. - Build tests, monitoring, and data quality checks that catch problems before a stakeholder has to tell you. - Help keep a warehouse of hundreds of terabytes fast, reliable, and cost-efficient. - Own undefined data problems from first idea to production. No playbook. You own it all.   WHAT YOU'LL BRING - Strong Python and SQL. You use AI tools to move faster, and you still verify the output. - Proof of depth as an engineer: a degree in computer science or a related field, internships, open-source work, a thesis, or a system you built yourself and kept running. - Hands-on experience with a database beyond the basics (PostgreSQL, MongoDB, or similar). You understand schemas, indexes, and what breaks under load. - You get going on a vague problem without waiting for a spec, and you take it further than you were asked. - You think about reliability. You debug rigorously when things break, and you want to know why before you fix it. - Bonus: Kafka or Pub/Sub, dbt, Docker, Terraform, competition results, or a project you built and hardened yourself.   WHY ALMEDIA - Grow at Almedia: profitable from launch, higher revenue per employee than Big Tech. - Sharp, small team: we keep it small on purpose, every hire raises the bar. - Equity: every Berlin employee gets a stake. - Top-of-market baseline. Deliver outlier impact, earn accordingly.   Small team, high

Here as all our engineers, you will have real impact from week one and be a part of a team shipping a product millions of people use every day. Your first 12 months compress what takes 3 years elsewhere. You'll join a small team of engineers who have built and shipped at scale, with the support to learn fast. Show us you can own more, and we'll give you more. We're looking for AI-native Junior Software Engineers who know how to build with AI tools, with different focus points, so you can pick your track: 1. TypeScript (Backend or Frontend): - If you love building things people see and use. - You'll build features in our web and mobile apps, test what works with real users. - You'll need: strong TypeScript understanding with a focus on either Node.Js or React.Js. 2. Python (Backend): - If you love building the systems behind the app. - You'll build the services that handle rewards, offers, and payments for millions of users. - You'll need: strong Python and SQL. 3. DevOps: - If you love building the tools that help everyone else ship. - You'll build the CI/CD pipelines, deployments, and AI tooling our engineers use every day, and make them faster and safer. - You'll need: strong TypeScript, Python, or Rust; Kubernetes or GitHub Actions is a plus. 4. Staff Data Scientist We're looking for a Staff Data Scientist with high ownership to work on meaningful challenges at scale. You spot leverage points others miss: measurement systems that unlock pricing, experimentation infrastructure that multiplies output, causal models that rewrite unit economics. You own these end to end. We value diverse technical lenses. Whether you are: - Causal inference specialist: propensity matching, DID, synthetic control, IV estimation. You turn observational chaos into rigorous insight. - Experimentation architect: designing multi-arm tests, MMM, MTA, uplift modelling. You define statistical rigor. - Systems thinker: building reward structures, pricing algorithms, ranking functions that balance engagement, conversion, and sustainable ROAS. - Zero to one builder: taking vague business questions into production data products. What You'll Own - Measurement strategy. Design causal frameworks that reveal unit economics, attribution, and intervention impact. Own the gold standard documentation so others ship faster. - Experimentation infrastructure. Build platforms that enable rapid iteration and define statistical rigor without sacrificing speed. - High leverage models. Identify and own the models that move unit economics: pricing, ranking, user incentive systems. Partner with engineering to productionize rigorously. - Technical leadership. Mentor junior data scientists. Set the bar for how we think about causality, measurement, and trade offs. Drive clarity when stakeholders disagree. - Cross functional influence. Work alongside Product, Engineering, and Leadership to turn data insight into business action. What We're Looking For - Proven autonomy. Track record moving unit economics through novel approaches. You own problems end to end. - Causal thinking. Deep experience with causal inference techniques (propensity matching, DID, synthetic control, IV estimation). You reason about causality, not just fit models. - Experimentation expertise. Led complex multi-arm experiments and designed or owned MMM, MTA, or uplift modelling systems. You understand type I and type II error costs. - Production maturity. Built and deployed models in product environments (Gaming, AdTech, user incentive systems preferred). You own metrics, monitoring, and decay. - Data engineering fluency. Comfortable with modern data stacks (dbt, Airflow, Kubernetes, Terraform). You architect alongside engineering, not just c
