Prebid

Prebid is a open-source header bidding standards body for publishers and ad tech.

Analyst Perspective

Prebid is a US-based not-for-profit organisation that develops, maintains and governs open-source infrastructure for programmatic advertising, primarily around header bidding. Its core products include Prebid.js for web header bidding, Prebid Server for server-side auction orchestration, Prebid Mobile for in-app bidding, SharedID for publisher-centric identity, and analytics and operational tooling for monetisation workflows. Its main customers and users are digital publishers, app publishers, ad operations teams, developers and ad tech companies participating in the open web advertising ecosystem. Prebid does not primarily make money by licensing its core software. Instead, it funds ongoing development and governance through paid organisational membership dues, with pricing linked to member type and revenue. Value is created by providing open, interoperable standards and software that help publishers reduce dependency on closed platforms, access multiple demand partners and improve auction transparency and yield.

Analyst Signal Briefing

Updated: 30 Jun 2026

Prebid.org has joined a strategic coalition led by WPP and major media owners, including Disney and Netflix, to establish governance and interoperability standards for agentic video buying. This collaboration aligns with the integration of Prebid modules into IAB Tech Lab’s AAMP 2.0 SDKs, focusing on automated discovery and negotiation workflows. Concurrently, the organisation faces a leadership transition as President Mike Racic departs to join Knower Tech. Furthermore, Prebid is identified as a key participant in IAB Tech Lab’s proposed SupplyChain v1.1 extension to enhance programmatic supply-path transparency.

Category Differentiation

Prebid is not a demand-side platform or a media seller; it is a not-for-profit steward of open-source publisher monetisation infrastructure. It should also be distinguished from proprietary ad servers and closed-platform auction systems.

Prebid: About

Prebid operates a consortium-style business model built around open-source adtech infrastructure and ecosystem governance. It creates value by maintaining common technical standards, software libraries and interoperability layers that publishers and ad tech vendors can adopt without direct licence fees. The organisation is funded through paid membership, while implementation, hosting and operational services are often delivered by member companies and ecosystem partners rather than by Prebid itself.

How Prebid Works & Monetises

Business model analysis and core revenue streams

Prebid’s primary monetisation mechanism is paid annual membership dues assessed by business type and revenue. Its core software stack is free and open source, so it does not rely on classic SaaS seat fees, media take-rates or licensing as the main revenue engine. Commercial value around deployment is also captured indirectly across the ecosystem via partner-led implementation, hosting and managed services built on top of Prebid technologies.

IAB Tech Lab Proposes SupplyChain v1.1 for schain

The IAB Tech Lab has proposed Supplychain v1.1, an extension to the OpenRTB Supplychain (schain) object, to make technical hops in programmatic bid requests more visible. The draft adds a new version marker and a flag (hp=0) to indicate actors that take technical responsibility for a bid request without participating in the payment flow (examples: Prebid, ad servers, SSAI platforms, SDKs, wrappers). The proposal is in public comment until 21 August 2026. The change aims to shift supply-path-optimization (SPO) away from simplistic node-counting toward transparency, accountability and bid-quality analysis, but adoption depends on coordinated implementation and consistent, machine-readable data across SSPs, DSPs, publishers and ad infrastructure vendors.
