81% Abandon Online Purchases Over Product Information

AKeneo conducted a cross-country study on online shopping behavior, surveying 3,500 consumers across seven European markets about why purchases fail despite a product matching buyers' needs. The study finds 81% of respondents have abandoned a purchase due to insufficient or faulty product information. Shaped around transparency, quality, and sustainability, respondents in Europe increasingly demand accurate, consistent product data; German buyers, in particular, place high importance on certificates and quality seals (55%) and environmental considerations (54%). When evaluating products, consumers trust information from marketplaces (25%), specialist retailers (23%), and retailer websites or online price-comparison pages (22%). The research also shows that 81% research online before buying, and 53% would return an item if information were not satisfactory. Finally, about half of respondents in Germany (53%), France (46%), and the UK (37%) would pay a 10%+ premium for precise product details, according to Tobias Schlotter of Akeneo.
