SoftBank's $33B Gamble on Massive U.S. Gas Plant
SoftBank’s subsidiary SB Energy plans to build a 9.2 gigawatt natural gas-fired power plant on the Ohio–Kentucky border, a project Bloomberg reports could cost about $33 billion. If completed, the plant would be the largest in the U.S., with capacity to power roughly 7.5 million homes. It is unclear who will ultimately fund the project; historically new generating capacity costs are often borne by ratepayers. SB Energy is a partner with OpenAI on the Stargate project, and SoftBank and OpenAI are building a proof-of-concept data center at the former GM Lordstown plant, but SB Energy has not stated whether the new plant would feed the grid or power data centers directly. The build would likely take years and faces equipment shortages; estimated direct CO2 emissions are around 15 million metric tons per year, with additional climate risk from methane leaks in the natural gas supply chain.
OpenAI Unveils New Stargate Campus in Michigan
OpenAI announced a new Stargate campus in Saline Township, Michigan, as part of its existing partnership with Oracle. The Michigan site is being developed by Related Digital with construction expected to begin in early 2026 and is projected to create more than 2,500 union construction jobs. The project uses a closed-loop cooling system to reduce water consumption and will be served by DTE Energy using existing excess transmission capacity, with any required upgrades funded by the project rather than local ratepayers. Combined with previously announced U.S. Stargate sites with Oracle and SoftBank, OpenAI says the initiative brings total planned Stargate capacity to over 8 gigawatts and more than $450 billion in investment over the next three years, moving toward a previously announced 10-gigawatt, $500 billion commitment.
Nexus Seeks $15B Loan for Google‑Backed Anthropic Data Center
Morgan Stanley is in advanced talks to lend $15 billion to Nexus Data Centers to finance a large data‑center campus in Hubbard, Texas, that would serve Anthropic, CNBC reported. As part of the arrangement, Google has agreed to backstop Anthropic using its investment‑grade credit rating. The report notes Anthropic has been expanding compute capacity through multiple infrastructure deals this year with companies including AMD, SpaceX, Google and Broadcom. CNBC cites a confidential source for the financing discussions and says Anthropic, Nexus and Google did not comment.
