Sustainability and Legislation Series: Chapter 9 - What the Future Holds

Ad Market Reassesses Sustainability Amid Economic Uncertainty

In an interview with ADZINE, Francois Roloff says sustainability remains central to the advertising industry but is being reframed from a moral/climate discourse to an operational, efficiency-driven agenda. Economic pressures, geopolitics and lower political attention have shifted priorities toward measurable outcomes and ROI. Roloff argues eco-efficiency — aligning economic and ecological efficiency — is a gain paradigm: digital media optimisation can cut emissions (he cites Kleinanzeigen saving four‑digit tonnes of CO2 in 2024 through media optimisation). Regulatory drivers (CSRD, EU climate targets) and Scope 1–3 measurement are increasing reporting obligations. Roloff warns optimisation has limits; residual Scope‑3 emissions will likely need offsets at rising carbon prices (projected €100→€400–500/tonne) and could imply substantial industry costs. He expects 2026 to bring hands‑on operational changes: integrated sustainability KPIs, more focus on social and governance aspects, and renewed attention to ad fraud and viewability.
