Jo Bromilow urges social media leaders to embrace 'a little bit weird'
In an interview with The Drum, Jo Bromilow, Director of Social and Influencer at MSL UK, shares her views on the future of social media leadership. She emphasizes the importance of embracing one's uniqueness ('being a little bit weird') and investing in long-form writing and speaking skills to counter the industry's obsession with optimization, which is exacerbated by formulaic AI-generated content. Bromilow highlights the growing significance of social commerce and generative engine optimization (GEO), but warns brands to protect the trust and authenticity that made social media effective for sales and LLM training. She criticizes the over-reliance on short-term commercial benefits that can undermine influencer marketing, and expresses frustration with inconsistent ad disclosure rules and algorithmic dependencies, especially in restricted categories like HFSS. She advocates for showing up on fewer platforms with more intention, moving away from trends like NFTs and the metaverse that led to burnout.
WPP cuts 1,000 more jobs as AI reshapes agency model
WPP is cutting an additional 1,000 jobs globally before the end of the year, bringing total reductions since the start of 2025 to almost 11,000. The holding company reported headcount of 97,388 at the end of June, down 6.4% year-on-year, and is targeting £500m in annualized savings by 2028. CEO Cindy Rose said new-business win rates have improved, citing wins including Huawei, Tesco, L'Oréal and Skechers, but CFO Joanne Wilson noted losses such as Mars, Coca-Cola North America and Paramount will continue to weigh on results. Gartner's Jay Wilson said stagnant marketing budgets and AI-driven efficiency are pushing agency fees to a projected all-time low of 15% of marketing budgets by 2030, inverting the traditional staffing pyramid. The cuts echo broader industry moves, including Omnicom's roughly 4,000 post-IPG-acquisition job cuts and Dentsu's planned elimination of about 3,400 roles outside Japan. WPP shares fell 3.7%.
Taboola: Tesco Clubcard Readership Surges 1,876%
Taboola's Newsroom data shows UK readership of Tesco Clubcard articles rose 1,876% in the most recent 30-day period versus the prior 30 days, generating more than 335,000 page views across Taboola's UK publisher network (up from ~17,000). The surge is attributed primarily to the impending expiry of £11 million in Clubcard vouchers, which publishers warned would become invalid after 11:59pm on 31 August. Additional drivers cited include the return of Clubcard Challenges, Tesco’s "Know What You’re Sitting On" campaign and promotional activity such as the OVO Clubcard Millionaire prize draw. Taboola communications lead Dave Struzzi commented on publishers' role and the attention the Clubcard brand is generating for Tesco.
