Google ends ten blue links with AI-powered Search
Google announced a major AI-driven overhaul of Google Search that replaces the traditional list of ranked links with interactive, agent-driven experiences. The update centers on an expanded “intelligent search box,” new AI-powered query suggestions, AI Overviews with follow-up conversational questions, generative UI widgets, and the ability for users to create persistent “information agents” that monitor the web and synthesize updates. Google says the system was built with Google DeepMind and uses Gemini Flash 3.5 and Antigravity (its agentic development platform). Core search changes will roll out broadly this summer for free, while mini-app building and information agents will arrive first for Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers. Google framed the changes as making search more action-oriented, but the shift is likely to further reduce publisher referrals and change how search intent is monetized.
Google AI Mode adds hover link pop-ups
Google is expanding its AI Mode and AI Overviews in Google Search with a UI update that reveals groups of links as hover-activated pop-ups on desktop. When users hover over a link group, a window with multiple sources, thumbnails, and brief descriptions appears, while the core AI answer remains in the background. Google also enlarges link icons to be more descriptive and prominent across AI responses. Robby Stein, Vice President of Product for Google Search, shared a public preview of the change on February 17, 2026. The goal is to help users jump directly to publisher sites and provide more source context within AI-generated answers. Publishers see potential traffic benefits, but the shift toward generative search continues to raise concerns about declining external clicks. The update follows earlier tests of link carousels and inline links at the end of answers.
Publisher Challenge: AI Overviews Move to AI Mode on Mobile
Google is testing a seamless integration of AI Overviews with AI Mode in mobile Search, enabling users to switch directly from an AI Overview to a follow-up AI Mode conversation from the search results. Powered by Gemini 3, the enhanced AI features aim to deliver more nuanced, multimodal answers and a personalized, on-the-fly layout including images, videos, and tables. Google executives describe the flow as one continuous experience for quick snapshots and deeper exploration, while Sundar Pichai cautions that AI-generated content can contain errors and should be verified. The move could boost dwell time and advertiser opportunities, but publishers warn of potentially reduced organic traffic as AI Overviews and AI Mode steer users toward Google properties such as YouTube. The test was announced as globally ongoing on mobile in December 2025, reflecting Google's ongoing AI experimentation in search.
