Netherlands Builds Own Linux for Government
The Dutch government is developing DAWO (Digitaal Autonome Werkomgeving Overheid), a sovereign, open-source digital workplace for its public administration, based on the NixOS Linux distribution. This initiative, led by the Ministry of the Interior and implemented by state IT providers SSC-ICT, DICTU, and DUO-ICT, aims to reduce dependency on US tech giants like Microsoft. The trigger was Microsoft cutting the email account of ICC Chief Prosecutor Karim Khan due to US sanctions, highlighting the risks of relying on foreign tech. Eight municipalities are testing the system, which includes Nextcloud, Collabora, Element, and OpenProject under the 'MijnBureau' suite. A stable version is expected next year, with challenges in migrating legacy applications, ensuring MS Office compatibility, training staff, and ensuring long-term maintenance. Similar open-source initiatives exist in Denmark, France, Switzerland, and the German state of Schleswig-Holstein.
