Waymo to End Uber Exclusivity in Austin, Atlanta by 2028
Waymo co-CEO Tekedra Mawakana confirmed to Bloomberg that the company will end its exclusivity agreement with Uber in Austin and Atlanta starting January 2028. This will allow Waymo to offer rides directly through its own app in those markets, similar to its operations elsewhere. Uber confirmed it will continue to host Waymo robotaxis on its app as long as both parties agree, but the change sets up direct competition. Mawakana said the partnership was initially pursued for scale, but the rider experience has been inconsistent. The move follows earlier reports that Waymo was considering exiting the Uber deal, which was set to expire in May 2028.

Waymo expands overseas but remains niche cash-burning business
Alphabet's third-quarter earnings revealed that its Other Bets segment, which includes Waymo and Isomorphic Labs, generated $372 million in revenue, a mere 0.3% of Alphabet's total sales. The segment's operating loss widened to $2.05 billion from $1.43 billion a year earlier. Despite this, Waymo continues aggressive expansion: it now operates in 15 major U.S. cities and recently launched public service in San Antonio, San Diego, and Tampa. International plans include Canada, Germany, Singapore, and Spain, with Germany slated for 2027 as its first EU market. Waymo faces competition from Amazon's Zoox, Tesla, and China's Baidu Apollo Go. The company recently closed a $5 billion term loan, its first debt financing, following a $16 billion funding round at a $126 billion valuation in February. Alphabet's overall results missed expectations, sending shares down nearly 10%.
