SunExpress

SunExpress is a leisure airline connecting Europe and Turkey through direct digital sales.

Analyst Perspective

SunExpress is a Turkey-based airline founded in 1989 and operated as a joint venture between Turkish Airlines and Lufthansa. Its core business is direct passenger air travel, with a strong leisure orientation on routes between Europe and Turkey. The company sells flights through its website and mobile app and supplements ticket revenue with ancillary services such as baggage, seat selection, and other travel extras. Beyond air transport, SunExpress uses owned digital channels and its passenger relationship to deepen monetisation. Its direct customers are primarily leisure and business travellers, while advertisers and agencies represent a secondary B2B customer group for media inventory.

Category Differentiation

SunExpress is an airline operator selling passenger travel, not an adtech platform or travel metasearch engine. Its advertising offer is a secondary owned-media sales activity rather than its core business.

SunExpress: About

SunExpress operates a passenger airline business centred on scheduled leisure-focused air travel between Europe and Turkey. It creates value by operating route capacity, selling seats through direct digital channels, and increasing yield per passenger through ancillary add-ons and loyalty-driven repeat purchase. A smaller adjacent revenue stream comes from monetising owned passenger touchpoints through direct advertising and brand partnership sales.

How SunExpress Works & Monetises

Sun Express Unveils Stunning 3D Ads on London's Iconic Screens

London’s Outernet screens host a new 3D advertising campaign for Sun Express, the 1989 joint venture of Lufthansa and Turkish Airlines. The campaign uses anamorphic 3D on standard DOOH displays and includes a QR code for a prize, with Metads handling creation, animation, rendering, and the ad server for programmatic delivery. Metads, a Düsseldorf-based company founded in 2023, has previously executed 3D campaigns on New York’s Broadway and Berlin’s Alexanderplatz and plans further international large-format deployments. Sun Express CMO Benedikt Sieweke says the activation elevates the brand’s message and delivers a 'wow' effect, while Metads CEO Lukas Flöer emphasizes the goal of making advertising more engaging and less obstructive for consumers. Flöer is listed on Forbes’ 30 Under 30. The campaign highlights collaboration between a traditional airline brand and a German technology provider, showcasing immersive, screen-based formats in major urban centers.

RMS Leverages AI for Fast, Scalable Audio Advertising

RMS, a German audio advertising broker, is adopting an AI-powered platform from Audiostack to automate and scale audio production, including text-to-speech, voice cloning and post-production. The goal is to realise the entire creative process with AI for campaigns, enabling faster, scalable and more personalised audio spots. RMS notes that the solution offers a favorable price-performance ratio and lowers barriers to testing audio advertising. Audiostack asserts its platform can complete end-to-end audio production in eight seconds. A test campaign with SunExpress Airlines in Germany during Black Week showcased AI-generated spots. Audiostack originated in the UK (founded 2019) and now serves Europe, while RMS operates in Germany and Austria with around 150 employees across five locations. The collaboration positions RMS as a key partner in bringing AI-driven audio creation to the German market.
