Analyst Signal Briefing

Updated: 11 Aug 2026

Following the merger into Burda Verlag, Hubert Burda Media has consolidated its Focus brand family under new Chief Digital Officer Stefan Ottlitz and appointed Wiebke Meeder as Chief Revenue Officer. This leadership transition follows the departures of co-CEO Daniel Steil and senior digital executives Elfi Langefeld and Martin Weese. To counter AI-driven traffic declines, the group is prioritising first-party data and generative engine optimisation. Additionally, new Head of Social Media Ariane Fries has launched a Creator Hub to train internal staff as news creators, supporting CHIP.de’s continued evolution into a digital advisor.

Category Differentiation

BurdaForward is not a standalone adtech vendor or social platform; it is primarily a German digital publisher and media monetisation business. It should also not be confused with its parent company, Hubert Burda Media.

BurdaForward: About

BurdaForward creates value by aggregating large consumer audiences across owned digital publishing brands and converting that attention into advertising revenue. It owns and operates editorial properties, packages their inventory centrally, and sells campaign access to brands and agencies through direct sales, managed advertising solutions and self-booking tools. Its targeting and contextual products improve campaign relevance and monetisation efficiency, supporting higher-value media sales within privacy-conscious market conditions.

How BurdaForward Works & Monetises

Business model analysis and core revenue streams

BurdaForward monetises chiefly through ad-supported publishing. Its revenue model includes direct sale of display, native and video inventory across its owned publisher portfolio; programmatic advertising; self-serve campaign booking through BurdaForward Ad Manager; and premium packaged solutions under its Goodvertising approach. Pricing is most likely based on CPM for scalable inventory, fixed sponsorship or branded content packages for integrated campaigns, and campaign-based commercial agreements for consultative advertising solutions. Commerce-oriented integrations may contribute a smaller ancillary stream on selected properties such as CHIP.

Five Tips for Publishers Facing the Zero Click Challenge

MEEDIA reports that publishers are losing referral traffic from Google as AI-generated summaries (AI Overviews) reduce the need for users to click through to websites. Citing a Seer Interactive study showing a 61% drop in organic CTR and a 68% drop in paid CTR for information queries with AI Overviews, Malte Gibbe (Seedtag) and Carsten Sander (BCN) outline five practical responses: (1) analyze crawl behaviour and implement Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) using server logs, (2) design content to encourage exploration, (3) combine paywalled and free content, (4) retain audiences via newsletters/logins and first‑party data, and (5) prioritise brand building so publishers appear in LLM answers. The article warns that sustained Zero Click effects could undermine precise targeting and the open ad ecosystem, while also noting publishers can use AI as a tool to develop new formats faster.
