Analyst Perspective

Bitkom e. V. is a German digital industry association headquartered in Berlin. It represents companies in the digital economy and acts as a policy, advocacy, and industry coordination body rather than a commercial software, media, or advertising operator. Its activities centre on representing member interests, advising policy-makers on digital policy, and serving as an institutional voice for the German technology sector. The organisation creates value by convening companies, producing sector representation, and influencing the policy environment in which digital businesses operate. Its direct customers are member companies and industry participants that join for representation, access, and sector coordination. Its economic model is association-based rather than product-led, with revenue structurally tied to membership and related organisational activities rather than software licensing or media sales.

Privacy Gateway filters sensitive data before ChatGPT

Researchers at FernUniversität Hagen developed a prototype called Privacy Gateway that automatically recognises and removes sensitive information from user prompts before they are sent to large language models. The system uses a "codebook" that encodes legal definitions from GDPR (Articles 4 and 9) and German trade-secret law to justify why data must be protected, distinguishing it from simple keyword-based redaction. The prototype was evaluated in a study using an extensive dataset of everyday scenarios (DOI provided); results show the filter reliably anonymises many sensitive items but there is a trade-off: in prompts containing extensive personal data (e.g., detailed medical cases) removing information can substantially degrade answer quality. The article notes wider concerns about routine, unintentional sharing of personal data with AI tools and cites a Bitkom survey that one-third of Germans use AI at least weekly.

The campaign aims to educate social audiences about the AfD and to expose extremist narratives. The report was published by Tim Theobald on HORIZONT on 2026-08-19.

Survey: 14% of Companies Use AI for Work References

A representative survey commissioned by the German digital association Bitkom of more than 600 companies finds growing but still limited use of artificial intelligence in HR departments. According to the survey, 14% of companies already use AI to write work references, while larger shares can imagine using AI for such tasks in future. AI is also used for individual training (16%), onboarding (14%), automated internal HR queries (13%), workload assessment (13%) and performance evaluation (12%). Bitkom warns that data-protection concerns and uncertainties around the EU AI Act could classify some HR AI applications as high-risk and slow further adoption.
