Publishers launch SPUR content telemetry standard
Publishers have formed the Standards for Publisher Usage Rights (SPUR), a publisher‑run coalition to build a content telemetry standard that tracks how AI systems access and use journalistic content. SPUR’s founding members include major news organisations such as the BBC, Financial Times, The Guardian, Sky, The Times of London, MediaHaus and, this week, the Associated Press. A technical working group published the telemetry standard on June 12 and opened it for public comment until July 24; the proposal defines five event types (retrieved, grounded, cited, displayed, engaged) and a data schema for reporting usage back to publishers. Microsoft, CDN vendor Fastly and several licensing/infra startups have provided feedback or signalled implementation interest. The coalition aims to move AI usage from opaque scraping toward usage‑based licensing publishers control.
SPUR launches AI content tracking standard, invites OpenAI, Google to board
A coalition of media organizations including the Guardian, Financial Times, BBC, Sky, and the AP has released a new standard for tracking how AI tools use publishers' content. The Standards for Publisher Usage Rights (SPUR) initiative published its content telemetry standard on October 2, 2026. The standard creates a process to track and report when content is retrieved, grounded, cited, presented, and engaged with by AI tools, and report usage back to publishers. SPUR has invited OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, Meta, and Microsoft to join its new AI Licensing Advisory Board to help shape implementation. The board aims to ensure tracking rules work for both publishers and AI companies. SPUR is also developing agent tooling for AI companies to adopt the standard, supporting transparent reporting and licensing. Pilot programs with tech and AI companies are planned.
Ringier Joins Spur Coalition to Protect AI Usage Rights
Swiss media group Ringier has joined the Spur coalition (Standards for Publisher Usage Rights) as a Standard Member, bringing its ~100 media brands across 11 countries into the alliance. Announced at the 77th World News Media Congress in Marseille on 2026-06-03, the non-profit coalition — founded by major publishers including the BBC, Financial Times, Guardian Media Group, Sky News and Telegraph Media Group — has expanded by 30 new members to 36 organizations. Spur's core project is a telemetry standard that will allow publishers to track in real time how generative AI systems use their content, with the stated goal of transparency and fair remuneration. Ringier is the coalition's first member from Switzerland and says the membership secures a role in shaping technical standards to protect and monetize journalistic content.
