U.S. proposes tariffs on Canadian goods
The U.S. administration announced a new round of tariffs targeting certain Canadian goods, invoking Section 338 of the Tariff Act of 1930 to justify duties of up to 50%. Targeted categories named in the announcement include autos, dairy, alcohol, fishing rods and wigs, while energy products such as oil and natural gas are exempt. The tariffs are scheduled to take effect on August 19, 2026, though negotiations between the U.S. and Canada in the coming weeks could change final rates. Analysts note the scope appears limited — about $20 billion in annual Canadian exports, roughly 5% of Canadian imports to the U.S. — but small and medium-sized businesses in targeted categories could be disproportionately affected. Legal challenges are possible because Section 338 has not previously been used by a president to impose tariffs.
