Microsoft Unveils 2027 Plans for Next-Gen Xbox Prototype
Microsoft announced it will distribute alpha prototypes of its next-generation Xbox console to game developers beginning in 2027. The new hardware will include a custom chip from Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) that Microsoft says offers a large improvement in ray-tracing performance, integrates intelligence into the graphics/compute pipeline, and improves efficiency and scale. The news follows leadership changes in Microsoft’s gaming unit — longtime gaming head Phil Spencer is departing and will be replaced by AI executive Asha Sharma — and comes amid declining Xbox hardware revenue and a recent impairment charge in Microsoft’s gaming business. Internally the console is referred to as Project Helix.
