Meta's New LLM-Based Ad Ranking System, Andromeda and GEM Upgrades
Meta announced three ad ranking upgrades on Wednesday. First, its retrieval system Andromeda now scores over a billion ads per second, thanks to a hardware and software overhaul with Nvidia, keeping more ad data on GPUs to reduce latency. Second, the ads recommendation model GEM has been upgraded, now reading twice the user history, delivering a 19% conversion improvement since last year. Third, a new generative recommendations model (GenRecs) uses LLMs to describe ads with semantic tokens instead of IDs, helping new ads overcome the cold-start problem. According to Meta, these improvements drove 8.3% more clicks and a 15.7% lift in conversions on Facebook in Q2. Meta's VP Matt Steiner says targeting's importance is diminishing as ranking models improve, advising advertisers to focus on strategy rather than manual optimization.
