Investing in Energy Tech: The Smart Move for AI Boom
A Sightline Climate report warns that power constraints are slowing data center builds, creating investment opportunities in energy technologies. Of 190 gigawatts of planned data center capacity tracked, only 5 GW are under construction and about 6 GW came online last year; roughly 36% of projects slipped timelines in 2025 and up to 50% of announced projects may be delayed. The shortfall in generation and grid capacity is driving large tech companies (Google, Meta, Amazon, Oracle) to invest in solar, wind, nuclear and long‑duration batteries such as Form Energy’s 100‑hour product. Startups focused on power conversion and grid/software management (Amperesand, DG Matrix, Heron Power, Camus, GridBeyond, Texture) are gaining investor attention. Goldman Sachs projects AI will raise data center power consumption ~175% by 2030, while the EIA expects U.S. battery storage capacity to approach 65 GW this year.
Metris Energy raises €4.35M for AI renewable asset platform
London-based Metris Energy, an AI-native platform for managing renewable energy assets, has raised €4.35 million ($5 million) in a Seed round. The round was led by PT1 Ventures, with participation from Octopus Ventures, AENU, Blackfinch Ventures, Plug and Play, and Love Ventures. The company also unveiled Metria AI, a new AI interface that automates tasks previously done manually by operations teams. Metris aims to become the unified data layer for the energy sector, integrating asset performance, revenue, and operational data. With this funding, Metris plans to expand into wind and combined heat and power (CHP) systems, and grow across Europe, particularly in Germany. The company reports 8x year-over-year revenue growth and manages over 10,000 solar plants and 500MW of capacity.
Hyperscalers' AI buildout to drive huge energy demand
CNBC Power Insider reports that record-scale capital spending by AI 'hyperscalers' is driving large incremental demand for power and energy infrastructure. BNP Paribas cites revised 2026 hyperscaler capex estimates of $725 billion (nearly double prior estimates), while UBS and Evercore publish multi-hundred-billion dollar scenarios for power and infrastructure spending (UBS: $511bn generation additions to 2030; Evercore: ~ $800bn). The piece highlights energy and infrastructure companies likely to benefit, naming Hut 8 and Fluence Energy as under-the-radar stocks that recently saw major deals and sharp share moves. UBS also points to Eaton and WEG, and to companies offering power-saving solutions (Johnson Controls, Trane Technologies). The article notes macro/commodity risks including JPMorgan analysis of oil inventories and an expectation the Strait of Hormuz could reopen in June.
