140 Publishers Demand AI Transparency in Frankfurt Appeal
On the opening day of the Frankfurt Book Fair, 140 publishers and book industry organizations, coordinated by the German Publishers and Booksellers Association (Börsenverein), issued the 'Frankfurt Appeal' demanding stricter rules for AI companies using copyrighted works. They criticize that AI firms train their models on protected content without consent or compensation, and often ignore usage reservations. The publishers call for greater transparency regarding which works are used for training, enforceable rights, and a fair licensing market. They argue that existing regulations, including the EU AI Act, lag behind the need for rights enforcement. The appeal is supported by major German publishers such as Penguin Random House, Holtzbrinck, and S. Fischer, as well as international bodies like the Federation of European Publishers (FEP) and the International Publishers Association (IPA). The initiative aims to set a precedent for media houses facing similar challenges.
