Bitget Loses $352 Million in Hack, CEO Suspects North Korea
Cryptocurrency exchange Bitget reported a hack involving unauthorized transfers from its hot and warm wallets, totaling approximately $351.6 million. CEO Gracy Chen suspects North Korean hackers based on IP address analysis, though attribution is not fully confirmed. The attackers breached a central backend system, forged transfer details, and initiated the exchange's authorized signature process without compromising private keys. Bitget has suspended withdrawals but trading continues, and its cold wallets remain unaffected. The company's Protection Fund, exceeding $465 million, is intended to cover the loss, supplemented by over $1 billion in equity. This incident echoes the February 2025 Bybit hack, also attributed to North Korean actors, which involved a compromised Safe{Wallet} developer machine and resulted in a $1.5 billion theft. Bitget had previously lent Bybit 40,000 ETH to help it recover from that attack.
Binance invests $100M in Circle for USDC expansion
Binance has agreed to invest $100 million in Circle, the issuer of the USDC stablecoin, as part of a five-year deal to promote USDC on its platform. The investment involves buying $100 million of Circle shares at $80.84 each, subject to a two-year lockup. In exchange, Circle will pay Binance a monthly incentive fee tied to USDC balances, giving USDC access to Binance's global user base. This strategic partnership aims to expand USDC's presence internationally and compete more directly with Tether, the largest stablecoin by circulation. Circle CEO Jeremy Allaire and Binance co-CEO Richard Teng both expressed enthusiasm for the partnership, highlighting its potential to increase dollar access and support financial inclusion in emerging markets. Circle shares rose over 1% in premarket trading following the announcement.
Binance opens Capital Connect to wealthy individual investors
Cryptocurrency exchange Binance is expanding its Capital Connect platform, previously limited to institutional investors, to include wealthy individual investors who hold at least $1 million in assets. The platform, built on Binance's Portfolio Account infrastructure, allows investors to compare and invest in professional strategies managed by trading teams, akin to separately managed accounts in traditional finance. Since May, the number of portfolios has roughly doubled to 212 portfolios from 77 trading teams as of September. Initially crypto-only, the platform now includes strategies incorporating traditional financial instruments, as Binance also expands its offerings around perpetual futures linked to pre-IPO and public companies, positioning itself as a competitor to traditional wealth management and financial institutions.
