How to Split Images for Social Media and Web Layouts

Instagram Grid Preview: Custom Layout

Instagram rolled out a grid customization workflow as part of a 2025 update. The platform made 3:4 the default grid size, moving away from a square grid and prompting creators to rethink visuals. A new feature, Preview customize, lets users crop and zoom individual grid posts within a chosen frame, creating a near-new layout by emphasizing a focal subject. Access is via the grid's three-dot menu or by long-pressing a visual. Instagram chief Adam Mosseri had previewed thumbnail personalization earlier in 2025, and the capability is now broadly available. Separately, the earlier Edit grid option to reposition posts has become unavailable for many users, and the grid sorting function has been restricted again. The piece also mentions broader creator tools and Reels guidelines.
