Tagesthemen to Broadcast Live from Ahrtal
ARD's nightly news magazine 'Tagesthemen' will broadcast live from Altenahr in the Ahrtal region to mark the fifth anniversary of the 2021 flood disaster. The special edition, produced in cooperation between ARD-aktuell, SWR and WDR, will be hosted by Ingo Zamperoni and include reporter pieces from Altenahr as well as reports from Erftstadt and Bad Münstereifel. Guests on site will include Dominik Gieler, the municipal association mayor of Altenahr, and hydrologist Thomas Roggenkamp from the University of Bonn. Marcus Bornheim, First Editor-in-Chief of ARD-aktuell, framed the on-site broadcast as an opportunity for direct dialogue with affected people. The program will air slightly later than usual and will be followed by a related documentary on Das Erste.
MDR presents Saxony-Anhalt election coverage plan
The public broadcaster MDR has published a detailed 30-page concept for reporting on the Saxony-Anhalt state election on 6 September. The plan applies the public-service principle of "graduated equal opportunities," allocating airtime according to each party's assessed significance. MDR will run single interviews and podcast "DeepTalks" with CDU, AfD, SPD, Die Linke and Greens, while FDP and BSW receive reduced prominence in several formats because they are not represented in the Bundestag. MDR schedules a "Wahl-Arena" debate (12 August) including all seven lead candidates, a prime-time journalistic Q&A on 26 August, and two election editions of the program "Fakt ist!" MDR leadership framed the concept as transparent and focused on reflecting which topics matter to citizens.
Thilo Jahn joins ARD culture show 'ttt' as co-host
Thilo Jahn has been appointed as the second presenter of ARD's culture magazine titel, thesen, temperamente ("ttt"), the MDR confirmed. Jahn will co-present alongside Siham El‑Maimouni, who will continue to lead roughly two-thirds of episodes; Jahn will present the remainder. His first appearance is scheduled for 30 August, and he will present four "ttt" episodes this year. The decision was reached unanimously by the participating ARD editorial teams (BR, HR, MDR, NDR, WDR and RBB) after a multi-stage selection process. Jahn is an experienced culture journalist who has worked for Deutschlandfunk Nova, One and WDR (including as host of Westart until 2023) and has received a Grimme Prize and a German Radio Prize. The move follows a previously announced and later-withdrawn plan to hire Thilo Mischke, a controversy that prompted the MDR to lead the selection process.
