Large Language Models (LLM) & AI Market: Business Orchestrator: Firms Reorganize Around Judgment

This essay argues that as AI makes generation (first drafts, code, analyses) dramatically cheaper, the scarce and valuable managerial input shifts to human judgment. Drawing on a large pre-registered field experiment (“The Cybernetic Teammate”, Organization Science, 2026) run inside Procter & Gamble and recent corporate financial signals, the author proposes a new operating unit—the harnessed agent—and a new role, the business orchestrator, who designs workflows, judgment checkpoints (junctions), and the topology of agent-human interactions. Key prescriptions include instrumenting judgment, building a deliberate staircase to train judges, running inward capture audits to define ownership, and protecting the firm’s exhaust flywheel of corrections and traces. The piece frames practical governance (junctions, gates, records, load) and metrics (leverage, absorption, boundary quality, judgment health, property, bench) to manage agentic operations.
