Girocard to Support In‑App Payments and Bookings

Germany's Girocard system is being expanded with new capabilities including in‑app payments, merchant whitelisting and wider uses for age checks, Euro Kartensysteme said. Christopher Kirsch, Director of Girocard Product Development at Euro Kartensysteme, told dpa the system is in talks with major grocery retailers to integrate Girocard into their apps and plans to enable in‑app payments from spring 2027. Girocard is also expected to be usable for car rentals and hotel bookings from early 2027. The operator intends to make Girocard compatible with Payback Pay and extend digital age verification (currently used at cigarette vending machines) to supermarket self‑checkout and vending machines. About 100 million Girocards circulate in Germany; Euro Kartensysteme says new functions will not raise costs for merchants or cardholders.
